Uplifting Things To Do Today!

As I reflect on this beautiful spring time around me, I was looking back in my journal and found this writing that I wanted to share with everyone today. The author is unknown, but I think it is well worth your time. I hope it speaks to your heart

Uplifting Things To Do Today!

Smile at a stranger.

Drop a coin where a child can find it.

Learn something new and teach it to someone.

Tell someone you LOVE them.

Hug someone.

Forgive someone who has wronged you.

Try saying, "I'm sorry" when you ought to.

Tell a child how great they are.

Sing a song about Jesus to yourself.

Keep a promise.

Call someone just to say hello.

Try listening more than talking.

Stand up for what you believe in.

Thank God for His beautiful creation.

Encourage someone who is feeling down.

Cherish today as if it were your last one.

Tell someone about Jesus!

Have a blessed Palm Sunday!

Birthday Memories Continued Part 2!!!!

On the night before my birthday, Adelaide, my dear friend Sherian and I went to dinner at a Japanese restaurant. It was so good and we had the best time talking and being together. Sherian has all boys, so I am thrilled to share Adelaide with her. Sherian is Adelaide's "other Mother". Adelaide and I could not ask for a more special friend!
The night after my birthday, a group of my girlfriends (that I have known for 25 years) took me out to dinner. We had a wonderful dinner and they showered me with some very thoughtful gifts. All these ladies are the greatest. We have raised all our children together and have been through both good and bad times. We all met at the same church 25 years ago. God has certainly blessed our friendships with each other.
This past Friday a group of my friends surprised me at breakfast. I knew I was meeting 2 friends, but 2 other friends showed up to treat me to breakfast as well. What a fun morning getting to talk and fellowship with my dear friends. The food was really good too.
Sorry for the 2 part post, but this is the only way I could figure out how to get all these pictures online, since they wouldn't load right the first time. If at first you don't succeed..... try, try, again!!!
This is another picture of the beautiful flowers that I received from my friend, Joyce at From This Side of the Pond. She was so thoughtful to send them to me and I am still enjoying them so much. Thanks again Joyce!!! I can't wait until we get to meet each other.
While we were in the mountains we got to go to a delicious spaghetti dinner/Bingo event at my sister's church. We had a buffet with all you can eat spaghetti, tossed salad, bread and a whole table of yummy desserts. (I should have shown you a picture of that!) This event was held in the community building next to the church where my Dad went to school as a child. It used to be a one room school house. After dinner we played Bingo and it was so much fun to yell B - I-N-G-O and win a small prize. My parents had the best time!!! And Mom and Dad won a lot of prizes.
My sweet friend Sherian gave me this beautiful planter as part of my birthday gift and it had hyacinth bulbs planted in it. After a few days, they bloomed and the aroma in my breakfast room has been amazing. The cardinals remind us of her sweet son Daniel, who is in heaven.
Right before my birthday I received this great package in the mail from my sweet friend, Valerie in Oklahoma. (Valerie Chris) She was so nice to remember me on my birthday. I love all my gifts Valerie. Thanks so much!!! The little Oklahoma magnet will remind me of you every time I see it on my refrigerator. Valerie and I got to meet each other last October. In fact, now that I have my new camera cord, I need to blog about our meeting and post the pictures. I will do that this week.
Valerie, Joyce and I are blog friends and we want to have a group meeting. We are thinking about meeting in NYC. Wouldn't that be fun?

Here is my sweet Adelaide and her little dog Holly. We got to see Adelaide while we were in the mountains visiting my sister, because Adelaide goes to college very near where my sister lives. As you can see, Holly was real excited to see Adelaide too.

I'm glad I was able to share with you some of my birthday memories this year. I turned 56 years old, but it was a really nice birthday. I am so blessed to have such awesome friends and family!! As you can see I was well celebrated this year. I still have not had my celebration with my Monday Bible study group. We have had some conflicts and have not met in the past few weeks. That makes it all the more fun. I can continue my birthday celebrations even longer.

And finally, thanks to all of you in blogland who were so thoughtful to send me such sweet comments and wish me a HAPPY BIRTHDAY. You are all the greatest!! I hope to meet more of you as time goes on. In the meantime, we will enjoy our online friendships.

Love & blessings,
Melinda

Birthday Memories~Mountain Visit - Part 1

I thought I would share some of my birthday pictures with you, but the computer is not co-operating and it will only let me upload 5 pictures at a time. I will just do this post in parts and hopefully that will work. This is a picture of my adorable cake holder that my sister gave me for my birthday with my initials on it. She also gave me a matching cupcake/pie/deviled egg holder that has the same polka dots, but on the side, it says "eat more dessert". My blogger friend, Joyce sent me these beautiful flowers. The flowers were so pretty that I decided to take them to the mountains with us for the weekend and then back home on Sunday. Joyce, thanks so much! I have really enjoyed my flowers. They are still so pretty!
Here is a picture of a barn with a pretty quilt painted on the side. There is a driving tour that you can take throughout the countryside to see lots of barns with quilts painted on them. We are going to do that this summer and enjoy seeing all the pretty quilts. For those of you who don't know me well, I LOVE to make quilts.
On Saturday we went antiquing. What fun to look for some special treasures. I did not find anything on this trip, but I have found some great things there in the past. I have a collection of milk glass, so I am always on the lookout for new and different pieces.
Lunch with my parents, my sister and my Aunt Venita. (in the red top)
We had a great lunch and lots of fun being together and celebrating my birthday.

This is a picture taken from my sister's front porch. It is much prettier when the leaves are on the trees, but I thought you would like to see the Christmas trees that are planted there. North Carolina grows lots of Christmas trees that are shipped all over the US.
As you can see, we had a great birthday weekend being together with family last weekend. I will do a second post and share some more pictures, since I can't get anymore to upload on this post.

I Won!!!!

I can't believe that I won this adorable heart pillow from Becky over at Sweet Cottage Dreams!!!! I am so excited, I can't stand it! I just love it.

Becky's friend, Kim, at Dear Daisy Cottage is encouraging fellow bloggers to make a fabric heart to send to Jack. ( A man who recently lost his wife to cancer.) Kim's blog friends made hearts for her that she keeps in a basket, so she thought the same idea would be great for Jack and bring him some comfort.

To encourage bloggers to make hearts to send to Jack, Becky hosted a giveaway with her own heart pillow. In order to win, you could leave a comment. If you had sent Becky's Scottie dog, Duhgall a birthday wish, you got another chance to win. If you were going to send Jack a heart you got another chance to win. All in all, you could get 3 chances to win.

I had earlier sent Duhgall a birthday wish and since I am making a heart to send to Jack, I got 3 chances to win. On Monday night, Becky let Duhgall pick a name out of the basket and my name was the one picked. I told Becky to be sure to give "Doogie" an extra dog biscuit for picking my name. I am just so excited.

If you have not had a chance to visit Becky's blog, Sweet Cottage Dreams, please do so. It is a beautiful blog and her dogs are the cutest ever.
Please head over and visit Kim's blog, Dear Daisy Cottage. It is precious too. You can also read the story about Jack's wife Tabatha. She died on January 23, 2010. The deadline to send a heart to Kim to be sent to Jack is March 31st, so there is still time. You might want to make one too!

Just think, your random act of kindness could mean the world to this sweet man who lost his wife to cancer and who is hurting right now. We never know what small thing we can do to brighten someones day.

Thanks Becky for making my day!

Love & blessings,
Melinda

Birthday Celebration!!!!

Monday, March 15th was my 56th birthday and was I ever celebrated. I felt so loved!!!
The celebrations actually began on Friday, when my sweet daughter, Lauren, and my amazing son-in-law, Thomas came to visit. (Their picture is a little later in the post)
We went out to lunch with my precious parents and kicked off the weekend of birthday festivities. This picture was actually taken on Sunday night when Adelaide and I went out to eat dinner with my dear friend, Sherian. We went out for Japanese and had the best time talking and visiting with each other. Sherian had some awesome gifts for me. She always gives the best and the most meaningful gifts.

Here is Lauren, my Mom and I as we were leaving to go to lunch on Saturday and out for some girl time. We went shopping! What else is a girl to do for her birthday?
Lauren surprised me with this gorgeous cake! I was so excited, because for those of you who know me well, I LOVE sweets. And this cake was decorated in my favorite colors...shades of blue. It was so pretty and it tasted as good as it looked. It was a 3 layer cake. There were 2 fillings between the layers. One was cappuccino and the other was almond. The icing was buttercream. YUM! My cake was one of my favorite birthday surprises! Thanks Lauren!
Here is a picture of the top of the cake. It was decorated and then air-brushed with more blue along the top. I loved the writing!
Here is a side view of the cake on my pretty Martha Stewart cake stand from Macy's.
Here is the happy couple, Lauren and Thomas! They have almost been married 3 years. Their anniversary is in May. I love them both, so much! We had such a good time having them here with us for the weekend. And their little dog, Chi-Chi came too, to wish me a Happy Birthday.
This is my birthday dinner that I ordered on Friday night when we went to one of our favorite restaurants, Liberty Oak. I had skewered shrimp with a tasso ham cream sauce served over a fried potato cake along with sauteed vegetables and roasted asparagus. Delicious!!! And it looks so pretty!
This is our group at the restaurant. The waiter took our picture for us. That is my husband Tom, my son-in-law Thomas and my daughter, Lauren.

On Sunday, we went to brunch with my parents, but my camera battery had died and the pictures we took are on Adelaide's camera, so I don't have them to post here. Sorry.

As you can see, I had a very nice birthday. I always treasure time with my family. And the celebration is still on-going. I am eating dinner out tonight with 6 of my dear friends. We have known each other for about 25 years and raised our children together and went to the same church. A very special group of ladies.

This weekend we are going to the mountains to visit with my sister, so the celebration will continue. I have not seen her in a while, so it will be fun to visit and spend time together.

Thanks to all of you who sent birthday wishes and also special gifts. It meant so much to me. I feel so blessed to have such wonderful friends and family. Thanks for helping to make my day so meaningful!! I love you all.

New Camera Cord!!!

I have never been so frustrated, but I think my dilemma is over. I hope and pray!!! Back in the fall I misplaced my camera cord that connects my camera to the computer. I kept thinking it would show up, but have not found it after about 5 months. It must have sprouted legs and walked off. I just can't imagine!

Anyway, my husband and son-in-law looked 3 places for me yesterday to try to find me another one and had no luck. They were referred to the Sony website. I was thrilled with that choice and immediately looked online for the cord. Needless to say, I found it, but it was $40. I was willing to pay that, although it seemed high to me. I proceeded to order it and low and behold, they were sold out. GREAT!!! Just my luck.

I proceeded to plan B. I Googled the name of the camera and cord and found a similar cord on Amazon. YEA!!! It said in the write-up that the cord was not the original to the camera, but it is new and is compatible with my model of camera. And the best part, it was only $1.99. I was ecstatic. You all just don't know how much I have missed being able to upload my current pictures for my blog. I have had to rely on old pictures that are already in my computer.

With shipping, my new cord will cost me less than $7. Now I am just hoping and praying that it will work with my camera as promised in the write-up. I so want to upload recent pictures to share with all of you who read my blog.

Wish me luck, the cord is supposed to be shipped on Monday, so I should get it this week. I can't wait to see if it works and to be able to upload my new photos. Not that I am a great photographer, by any means, but it is just nice to have current photos to share with all my sweet blog friends.

My daughter got home from her wonderful spring break trip in Destin, Florida last night and we are going to have a fun day today celebrating my birthday. For brunch today we are going out to eat with my parents and tonight we are going out with a dear friend.
I so love my time with family and friends!! I hope all of you have a great day.

Weekend Update!

For those of you who love birthdays as much as I do, have you registered at your favorite establishments that you frequent? I have been amazed at the wonderful gifts I have received via email for my upcoming birthday.

Bravo's Restaurant - free appetizer
Qdoba Mexican Restaurant - a free burrito
Zoe's Kitchen - buy 1 entree, get 1 free
Coldstone Creamery - free ice cream creation
Mimi's Cafe - $10 off my meal
Anthropologie - a birthday candle necklace and discount on a birthday purchase

These are the things that I have received so far. Isn't that great? As you can see, it doesn't take much to make me happy. I wish you all lived closer, we could go out to eat together. Wouldn't that be fun?

I have had a wonderful weekend so far. My oldest daughter, Lauren and her husband Thomas came up to visit on Friday morning. We had lunch out with my sweet parents on Friday. Then Friday night, Lauren, Thomas, my husband and I went out to dinner together to celebrate my upcoming birthday. Lauren got me the most beautiful cake from a local bakery, called Delicious! Believe me, the cake was not only beautiful, it was delicious too!!!

This morning, Lauren fixed a yummy breakfast for us all to enjoy. We then went shopping with my Mom. Thomas, his Dad and my husband all went out to do some "man errands", while the ladies were out shopping. They looked for a camera cable for me at 3 places, but had not luck. I am just going to order one from Sony. Hopefully it will come this week and I can post some of my birthday pictures. I really want you all to see the pictures of my birthday cake. I love blue and it was done in shades of blue and turquoise. So pretty and springy!!! I loved it and was so touched that Lauren got it for me to enjoy. She knows how much I love sweets!

We are awaiting the arrival of our other daughter, Adelaide, home from Destin, Florida tonight. She has been there all week having an awesome time on spring break. Go to her blog and see the gorgeous house they stayed in. It was so beautiful. You can click on her blog from my sidebar. She had a great time, but I am so excited to get to see her for a few days before she goes back to school on Monday.

Sunday night Adelaide and I are going out to dinner with my best friend, Sherian. We are all so thrilled to get to spend some "girl time" together. I can't wait to hear all about Adelaide's trip and share some time with our dear friend, Sherian. She is a joy in both my life and Adelaide's.

Guess what? My basement clean-up is going great, but is slow. It just takes time to weed through years of clutter and accumulated "stuff". I gave away a ton of stuff to a friend for her daughter to use for a yard sale for Young Life. My friend's daughter is going on a trip with Young Life this summer and this will be a way for her to earn her money. I also went through all my pre-school stuff and have a carload of things to give to a friend of mine who is still teaching.

My Mother made the executive decision that after all this cleaning, I was NOT going to have a yard sale. I agreed. It is just too much work for the amount of money you get out of it. I will just be thrilled to have a clean basement!!

I can now get my car in the basement to park. I am so excited! Someone commented about my basement and the fact that we park our cars down there. The way our house is built the basement is the whole underside of our house. Our garage doors are on the side and we drive our cars in and park there. The other half of the basement is just open storage area. We have shelving along the walls for storage boxes, etc. It is like an attic area, but just in the basement.

I am so happy that signs of spring are popping up everywhere. My daffodils are continuing to bloom and the weather has been a lot warmer. We have had rain and sunshine all weekend. Mother Nature can't make up her mind. One minute it is raining and the next minute the sun is out. I'm not complaining, at least it is not snow and cold.

Just an update on the activities around here this weekend. I hope your weekend has been a happy one.

Love & blessings,
Melinda

What a Difference a Week Makes!

Looking at the daffodils blooming now, who would have believed that exactly one week ago today, we had all this snow!!! A joke where I live in North Carolina is that if you don't like the weather, wait a few days and it will change. That was quite evident this past week.

We have had a really cold/snowy winter for our climate here in North Carolina, but I do believe that spring is here. Last week, we had all this snow and today it was 71 degrees and the daffodils are blooming.

Last Wednesday, March 3rd, this is what it looked like as I drove to work. The kids missed another day of public school that day.

Today at work, we played outside most of the day and we were comfortable with just our shirt sleeves. Last week it was freezing! BRRRR!! I can't believe the difference a week makes in the weather, but I am sure not complaining. It was so beautiful outside today.

I am so ready for spring to officially arrive, the days to get longer, the time to change and the leaves and flower blossoms to come out on the trees. The robins have already started showing up and digging for worms. Plus, March is my birthday month. YEA!

I hope the weather is improving where you live and that you can enjoy God's beauty that is evident all around you!

Rome Wasn't Built in a Day!!!

My basement took years to get in such disarray, so I have to be realistic and realize that it is going to take me way longer than a weekend to get it whipped back into shape. After working just one day on Saturday, I am pleased with what all I got done, but I have such a long way to go still. I have just got to keep my nose to the grindstone and stick with it. I so want my basement to be cleaned out and not cluttered.

I started working in the basement around 9am on Saturday and my sweet Mom came over to help me. She sat out in the driveway on a chair in the warm sun and went through "stuff" that I would take out to her. She is a great one to say "you don't need that anymore"!!! We loaded up her car with things to give to the Goodwill.

Another executive decision that my Mom made. We are NOT having a yard sale. Instead I am donating all my goods to the Goodwill. And my teacher things that are still usable are being given to a friend who still teaches.

I have found things in the basement that I did not even know I had. I have Rubbermaid storage boxes filled with memorabilia that I will have to go through later, but I can work on that this summer when the weather is warm and it is nice and cool in the basement. That stuff will take a lot of time to go through. Right now I am just concerned with getting rid of larger items that are taking up lots of room in the basement. As I stated in my last post, I would love to be able to park my car down there again.

I am thankful that Adelaide and her friends arrived in Florida on Saturday safely. I pray that they have a wonderful week of sunshine, rest and relaxation! Anything will be a welcome break from all the snow she has endured this winter at college.

I am off to the kitchen now to put the coconut/pecan icing on my German chocolate cake. My parents are eating dinner with us tonight. Mom and I are working in the basement again this afternoon. Wish us luck on the clean out. Isn't this warm weather delightful? Enjoy your Sunday and the week ahead.

Spring Cleaning!

I have been working all winter inside my house cleaning out closets, drawers, etc. and trying to get rid of "STUFF". My New Year's resolution was to ORGANIZE things in my house and try to get things in some 'semblance of order around here.

The worst part of my house is the basement. You see, we don't have an attic that we can get to easily, so everything goes in the basement. And believe me, everything is down there. Even my whole classroom contents from pre-school.

Now that the weather is going to be getting warmer, I will be able to work in the basement. I am going to go through all my stuff down there and try to get rid of a lot of things. I will either give it all to Goodwill or I might consider doing a yard sale. My neighborhood is having a community yard sale in early May and if I can get motivated, I might participate. I am not promising anything. Yard sales can end up being more trouble than they are worth, in the long run sometimes. I love going to yard sales, but it is hard work getting things priced and organized to have a sale. I'll see how things go.

My first area of business if just tackling the basement. It is so overwhelming!!!!! It is hard to know where to start. I hope I can feel good about getting rid of a lot of stuff and trying to eliminate so much of the clutter down in my basement. I would love to get my side of the basement cleaned out, so I can park my car down there again.

I hope all of you have a wonderful and productive weekend and that the weather in your area of the country is slowly beginning to improve and get warmer. My youngest daughter came home last night for spring break, but she is leaving on Saturday to go to Florida for the week. I hope they have some nice warm weather. If not, they will just enjoy their much-needed rest and relaxation.

Have a great weekend.
Love & blessings,
Melinda

Beach Trip!

Susan Me Wendy

My friend Susan and I left on Friday morning to drive down to Oak Island, NC for a weekend trip to visit our high school friend, Wendy. We had the best time!!!
We got there at lunch time and Wendy had the most delicious lunch prepared for us. A yummy chicken salad and homemade pound cake for dessert. We talked and visited after lunch and then she took us on a tour of the island in her car.

For dinner that night her husband joined us and we went to Southport for dinner at a pizza place. We sat out on the sunporch and it was decorated with white lights. The pizza was really good. Afterwards, we came home and Wendy served us an awesome chocolate cheesecake. We had fun looking at my old high school yearbooks and reminiscing about folks in our class. We were saddened to realize all the ones in our class who have died.

Our class (1972) is supposed to have a reunion in June of this year, so I am excited to be able to go and see everybody who will be there. My husband and I were high school sweethearts and we went to our 10th and 20th reunions, but we did not have a 30th. By now, people will have changed quite a bit. One nice thing about Facebook is that I have reconnected with lots of friends online from high school.

On Saturday we got up and Wendy had prepared a wonderful brunch for us. We enjoyed that before heading off for shopping and lunch in Southport. For lunch I had a fried green tomato sandwich. Doesn't that sound Southern?

We went to several antique/thrift type stores and I found some milk glass. I got a set of really pretty hobnail stemmed glasses and I also got a pretty milk glass candy dish. I also found one of those old china plates that people used to get when they went on vacation with a scene on it. This scene is Grandfather Mountain. I bought it to give to my parents to put in their mountain house. I thought it was the perfect gift for them, since we used to spend a lot of time there when I was young and also when my children were younger. There is a mile high swinging bridge there and it is a major tourist attraction in North Carolina.

On the way in from shopping on Saturday, we stopped at the fish market and bought fresh shrimp. For dinner that night we had peel and eat shrimp with hushpuppies and cole slaw. It was so good!!! Afterwards, Wendy invited a couple who lives next door to come over for dessert and coffee. We also played a game called Apples to Apples. It was a lot of fun!

On Saturday afternoon, we tried walking down to the beach, but the wind was so strong and the temperatures so cold, that we just about froze to death. It was so odd being at the beach and having such cold weather. I am used to being there in the summer, when it is so hot. It was still so nice to get away and have some much needed rest and relaxation. I had a nice time and Wendy and her husband were such great hosts. They have 2 little dogs (daschunds) who were adorable and we had fun with them too!

Sunday we awoke to another yummy brunch. This time we had quiche. For lunch on Sunday, we went to a fashion show/luncheon at a store in Oak Island near Wendy's house. The food was good and the fashions really put us in the mood for spring/summer. We left from there at 3pm to drive back home. It took us 4 hours to drive home, but Susan and I talked the whole way home and that made the time go by fast.

As you can see, I had a very nice weekend with my girlfriends! As far as I'm concerned, one can never go wrong spending quality time with girlfriends! After re-reading my post, it sounds like all we did was eat. I guess that is what vacations are for. Right?

I can't believe that Monday was March 1st. And today it has snowed all day. I don't think spring can make up it's mind about coming. I am ready anytime spring wants to come. I am tired of snow and cold weather.

My youngest daughter called tonight and she is coming home on Thursday before heading to Florida for spring break. She wants to come home to do laundry and run some errands on Friday before leaving on Saturday for sunny Florida. I am so excited to get to see her before she leaves. I hope everyone has had a nice day!

Oh, I took lots of pictures this weekend, but I still have not found my camera cord. I tried to buy one the other week, but could not find the right one for my camera. Wendy's husband went online over the weekend and found my camera cord from Sony, so I will just plan to order one from them. I think my other one sprouted legs and walked off. I cannot find it anywhere. The picture that I am showing on my post was on Wendy's Facebook page and I borrowed it from her.

Take care and enjoy the remainder of your week.

Love & blessings,
Melinda
