Rome Wasn't Built in a Day!!!

My basement took years to get in such disarray, so I have to be realistic and realize that it is going to take me way longer than a weekend to get it whipped back into shape. After working just one day on Saturday, I am pleased with what all I got done, but I have such a long way to go still. I have just got to keep my nose to the grindstone and stick with it. I so want my basement to be cleaned out and not cluttered.

I started working in the basement around 9am on Saturday and my sweet Mom came over to help me. She sat out in the driveway on a chair in the warm sun and went through "stuff" that I would take out to her. She is a great one to say "you don't need that anymore"!!! We loaded up her car with things to give to the Goodwill.

Another executive decision that my Mom made. We are NOT having a yard sale. Instead I am donating all my goods to the Goodwill. And my teacher things that are still usable are being given to a friend who still teaches.

I have found things in the basement that I did not even know I had. I have Rubbermaid storage boxes filled with memorabilia that I will have to go through later, but I can work on that this summer when the weather is warm and it is nice and cool in the basement. That stuff will take a lot of time to go through. Right now I am just concerned with getting rid of larger items that are taking up lots of room in the basement. As I stated in my last post, I would love to be able to park my car down there again.

I am thankful that Adelaide and her friends arrived in Florida on Saturday safely. I pray that they have a wonderful week of sunshine, rest and relaxation! Anything will be a welcome break from all the snow she has endured this winter at college.

I am off to the kitchen now to put the coconut/pecan icing on my German chocolate cake. My parents are eating dinner with us tonight. Mom and I are working in the basement again this afternoon. Wish us luck on the clean out. Isn't this warm weather delightful? Enjoy your Sunday and the week ahead.

  2. Before you know it, your basement will be clutter free and you'll feel so much lighter. I agree on the yard sale decision. Just get it out of the house for good.

  3. It always takes more time than you think. Just do what you can with the time you have each day, and soon you will have it just the way you want it. :-) It will be nice to be able to pull your car into the garage, instead of sitting out in the weather and hot summer sun.

  4. You're so blessed that you have your wonderful mom to come and help you. Memories are built doing the simple, ordinary things in life. I'm sure you're basement will reek of great organization when it's all done. Do we get to see pictures?

  6. You're absolutely right...you just have to keep at it. We're doing the same thing in our house. I'm not fretting over it (and NOT having a yard sale either). We'll just plug along until we're organized. Definitely by the end of summer.

  8. Good for you on tackling the basement. I go to PA. every summer with my mom and the last two summers we cleaned out the attic. Yep it actually took us two summers to get through!!! Quite an accomplishment but it is done now and we are both so happy!

  10. Good Luck! You sound very motivated. I don't like having yard sales either. They are just so much work. I sure GW was glad to get your goodies. Have a good week!

  11. I know it feels good to be making some progress. I agree with the Yard Sale thing...sometimes it's less stressful, quicker, and more efficient to just take it all to Good Will.

    Have a nice week!

  12. Hope we never have to move...it is unthinkable all the 'stuff' we have and not just in the basement. You will love the results of all your hard work and maybe you will inspire me!

  13. You go girl! I must have missed the post about parking your car - I've never heard of parking the car in a basement!?! And I'm with your mom - forget the yard sales and take it to Goodwill!! All the best:)

  14. It always feels so good to get a room or space cleaned out.
How sweet to have your mom there with you.
My daughter has always been the good one for me to have around when I'm cleaning because she'll say "You don't need that.....get rid of it!" We need someone like that.

Oh, that German chocolate cake sounds delicious!

I'm glad your daugter made it safely to Florida & I pray she has a very fun & relaxing time and a safe trip back.

  15. Good luck with the basement. I need to work on my garage...again. How does it get some messy so fast?! I really need to get rid of quite a bit.

I hope Adelaide and her friends have a ball in Destin. It was chilly when we left on Sunday and I think they are predicting some rain later this week. Hope not.

    Hugs!
